What is a Convalescent Home?

A Convalescent home for seniors is also referred to as Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities. These facilities provide services and care for older patients recovering from chronic illness, long-term medical issues and/or surgery.

Are Convalescent Homes Different From Assisted Living Facilities for Seniors?

While both provide senior care, assisted living homes differ from a convalescent hospital in a few ways. At a Convalescent home, once a patient completes care they may return home or not. Unlike an Assisted Living Facility, which is a permanent living arrangement for seniors with some independence, but are still in need of care and supervision.

Assisted Living homes are ideal for a senior who struggles with daily living activities such as dressing, hygiene, meal preparation, laundry and more. Often, in-home care from a loved one or professional may not be possible, if this is the case a facility like this is ideal.

A senior convalescent Home is more recovery-oriented. Patients may have had a surgery, medical event, or chronic condition which has caused a lack of mobility and/or function. The skilled nursing and rehabilitation are crucial to a seniors recovery so that they can both regain and maintain a more functional level of independence.
